Soul Motion Workshop mit Edgar Spieker

When people are asked about their most important values, freedom is often at the top of the list. For most of us, being able to live and act according to our own choices is a fundamental human need.

Our experience of freedom—or the lack of it—is shaped not only by our external circumstances, but also by our inner attitude and the way we respond to those circumstances. Two people in exactly the same situation may experience it very differently: one may feel spacious and free, while the other feels confined. And there is another paradox: having too many choices can itself create stress and overwhelm.

The opposite of freedom is limitation. And this is where the paradox emerges: freedom needs boundaries in order to be experienced as a positive and creative space.

Boundaries come in many forms. Any kind of structure—whether in time or space—is a boundary. A Soul Motion class has a defined beginning and end. The dance space has walls that clearly separate it from the outside world. A guided exercise provides a framework within which free exploration can unfold. And within the dance space there are both spoken and unspoken agreements that establish healthy boundaries, such as mutual respect and mindful interaction.

Looking beyond the dance floor, we can see that freedom and limitation are like two complementary poles that depend on one another. The sea is able to express its vast, free nature because it is held by coastlines and the ocean floor. Life itself derives much of its preciousness from its finite nature, existing between birth and death.

A dance space is the perfect place to approach this paradox of freedom through creative movement, exploring our own inner boundaries and inner expanses with curiosity and embodied awareness.

Our setting for this exploration is a retreat center with a particularly fitting name: Kloster Freiheit ("Freedom Monastery"), located directly on the shores of the Schlei inlet. Its magnificent, cathedral-like dance hall will be our sanctuary for exploration in both movement and stillness. The large lake just outside the retreat center invites us to let go, immerse ourselves in the water, and gently integrate our experience.
